Scott McTominay to undergo heart surgery at Naples
Naples midfielder Scott McTominay will have surgery for a benign arrhythmia and miss key fixtures.
Naples will be without Scott McTominay for several important fixtures after the Scotland midfielder was diagnosed with a mild benign arrhythmia. The club says he will undergo a heart procedure in the coming days and should be available again after the international break. McTominay has been a key player for Naples and was named Serie A’s best player for the 2024-25 season.
His absence begins with Saturday’s meeting with Inter Milan at 18:00. He is also set to miss Naples’ Champions League opener against Arsenal on September 9 at 21:00. The 29-year-old is expected to miss Scotland’s four Nations League matches during the next international window, against Switzerland, Slovenia and North Macedonia twice. His recovery is estimated at around 40 days.
The condition involves an irregular heart rhythm that can appear suddenly during exertion or at rest. The planned intervention is designed to correct the rhythm and is considered a safe, minimally invasive procedure. A return to competition within a month has been described as realistic, although Naples expects him back after the international break.
McTominay said he had only recently learned that surgery was required. He expressed his desire to continue helping the team, said he was not worried and indicated that he expected to return stronger.
