Skelly Alvero becomes costly outcast at Werder Bremen

Skelly Alvero is training with Werder Bremen’s reserves after falling outside the first-team plans in Germany.

Skelly Alvero’s future at Werder Bremen is increasingly uncertain after the French midfielder was removed from the club’s first-team plans. The 24-year-old is training with the senior group but playing for the reserve side, while potential buyers have yet to emerge.

Alvero has made only 20 appearances for Werder since arriving from Olympique Lyonnais. Lyon signed the defensive midfielder from Sochaux in July 2023 for €4 million, then sent him to Bremen on loan six months later. The German club completed his permanent transfer in July 2024 for €4.75 million.

The move has become an expensive problem for Werder. Alvero remains under contract until 2028 and earns €1 million per season, despite being left out of first-team matches since the start of the campaign. He spent four months on loan at Amiens from February to June 2026 before returning to Bremen’s setup.

His route back into the team is blocked by Youri Regeer, Ludovit Reis and Senne Lynen, who occupy the competition for the No. 6 position. With Alvero now limited to reserve football and little interest from other clubs, Werder face a difficult decision over a player who has not established himself after a sizeable investment.
