Sofyan Amrabat suspends Morocco duty under Mohamed Ouahbi

Sofyan Amrabat has made himself unavailable for Morocco while Mohamed Ouahbi remains national-team coach, pausing the midfielder’s international career without closing the door on a future return. The decision creates a break between one of the squad’s established players and the coach who took charge in March.

The 30-year-old Amrabat announced his decision on Tuesday through an Instagram story. He said he could not continue representing Morocco under the current coach and chose not to disclose the reasons. He also stressed that this was not an international retirement and that he could play for the national team again in the future.

Amrabat has represented Morocco since 2015 and was part of the side that reached the 2022 World Cup semi-finals. He also featured for the team at this summer’s World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Under Ouahbi, he started one group match and came off the bench in both the round of 16 and quarter-final.

The Ajax Amsterdam midfielder described playing for Morocco as the greatest honour of his career and said his attachment to the country and team remained unchanged. He wished his teammates and the staff well, while making clear that his current position will last for as long as Ouahbi is in charge.
