Sunderland turns to Malick Fofana as Paixao talks stall

Sunderland have pursued Lyon winger Malick Fofana after negotiations for Marseille’s Igor Paixao slowed.

Sunderland have opened a move for Lyon winger Malick Fofana after their negotiations with Marseille for Igor Paixao failed to progress quickly. The English club has already reached an agreement with the Brazilian player, but discussions with Marseille remain more difficult. Fofana has consequently emerged as an alternative target.

The situation adds pressure on Lyon, who need a major sale after losing their Champions League play-off against Fenerbahce. The French club will instead play in the Europa League and regard Fofana as the squad’s leading saleable asset. The 21-year-old Belgium international remains part of the group and was considered ready to feature against Le Havre.

Sunderland’s interest gives Lyon another possible route to the transfer income they require, although Fofana is also being followed by Roma, with talks held between the two clubs. Hull City have likewise spoken with the player. Lyon sporting director Matthieu Louis-Jean has indicated that the club has a plan for the final days of the window, while acknowledging that a sale is needed and that Fofana is one possible solution.

Paixao, a 26-year-old Brazilian left winger, joined Marseille from Feyenoord for €30 million in the 2025/26 season. His current market value is listed at €35 million. Sunderland’s shift towards Fofana shows how the stalled club-to-club talks over Marseille’s player are reshaping the English side’s recruitment plans.
