Tadej Pogacar faces a heavy expected Vuelta sanction

Tadej Pogacar is expected to receive a heavy sanction at the Vuelta a España, even as his performance has placed him in control of the general classification. The Slovenian took the red jersey at the start of the race and then extended his advantage in Andorra, giving him a commanding position after only three effective days of competition.

Pogacar leads Primoz Roglic by more than three minutes and is riding for UAE Team Emirates XRG. His margin already exceeds the level that has defined recent Vuelta editions, with Roglic’s 2021 overall victory producing the largest gap of the 21st century at 4 minutes and 42 seconds over Enric Mas. The current advantage leaves Pogacar with a clear route to the final victory, although the expected sanction remains the principal development surrounding his campaign.

A final gap of at least 10 minutes would also carry wider historical significance. No rider has closed out a Grand Tour by that margin or more since Laurent Fignon beat Bernard Hinault by 10:32 at the 1984 Tour de France. Pogacar’s own benchmark came at the 2024 Giro d’Italia, where he finished 9:56 ahead of Dani Martinez. The Vuelta has not seen comparable dominance since its 1960 edition, making the scale of his current lead exceptional by modern standards.
