Timothy Weah takes blame for Marseille’s third straight loss

Marseille’s difficult start has worsened, with Timothy Weah accepting personal responsibility after another league defeat. The United States and France international said he had not performed at full level and felt obliged to do more for the team, the supporters and the city.

Weah, who captained Marseille, acknowledged that a lack of confidence had affected his display and believed he should have done better on the decisive goal. His comments came after the visitors failed to convert opportunities, including an effort from Weah that forced Rennes goalkeeper Brice Samba to tip the ball over the bar. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg also missed a chance during a Marseille attack.

The defeat leaves Marseille searching for a response in their next two major fixtures. Weah called for the squad to remain united and said the team must keep its heads up, while also making clear that he expects more from himself as a leader.
