Vinicius Junior faces Canizares attack over 2032 renewal

Vinicius Junior’s new Real Madrid contract has come under fresh scrutiny after former Madrid goalkeeper Santi Canizares questioned why the club retained him. The criticism adds to an ongoing debate in Spain about the Brazilian forward’s conduct and value to the team.

Vinicius, 25, has extended his deal with Madrid through 2032. Canizares argued that the club had little choice but to renew the player because no other side had made a concrete approach. In his view, allowing Vinicius to enter the final year of his previous contract could have led to a free departure, while the lack of interest left Madrid without a realistic sale option.

The remarks followed Vinicius’ performance during Madrid’s difficult away match at Espanyol. He was accused of simulation on two occasions and repeatedly appealed to the referee for fouls, behaviour that irritated opponents and revived criticism of his attitude on the pitch.

Canizares, now a prominent football analyst in Spain, also questioned whether Vinicius’ contribution compensates for the problems he creates around the team. His assessment contrasts with the view that the Brazilian remains an important part of Madrid’s sporting plans, leaving the argument over his role unresolved despite the long-term contract.
