Zolani Tete: Four arrested over former champion’s killing

Four people have been arrested in connection with the killing of former world champion Zolani Tete in South Africa. One suspect has been formally charged with murder, while the other three are being held as the investigation continues. The suspects are aged between 22 and 28, according to police.

Tete was attacked last week as he was about to enter his home in Mdantsane, in the Eastern Cape province. Several armed men wearing masks opened fire before fleeing the scene. A 27-year-old woman who was with the boxer was also wounded in the shooting and taken to a nearby hospital for medical care.

The 38-year-old Tete won world titles in two divisions during a professional career that produced 29 victories in 34 bouts. He secured the IBF super-flyweight championship in 2014 before adding the WBO bantamweight crown in 2017. Those achievements made him one of the leading boxers produced by South Africa.

Tete had been preparing to return to competition after serving a four-year suspension for doping. The suspension ended on July 29, leaving him eligible to resume his career before his death. Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie said South Africa had lost one of the greatest boxers in its history.
