Amadou Gallo Fall sets conditions for BAL finals in Dakar

Dakar is in contention to host the next Basketball Africa League finals, but BAL president Amadou Gallo Fall says Senegal must turn ongoing discussions into a concrete agreement quickly. The next finals will be held outside Rwanda, with negotiations for a return to Senegal described as progressing well.

Fall said Dakar Arena’s absence from the previous season was keenly felt. The capital remains central to the league’s identity because of Senegal’s basketball tradition and its long relationship with the NBA. Around 20 players of Senegalese origin have played in the NBA, while Dakar Arena is regarded as the continent’s largest venue to host crowds of that scale for basketball.

The proposed return would also carry significance beyond the competition itself. The BAL will stage the “BAL in Dakar Festival” on 22 and 23 August at the Monument of the African Renaissance, with free entry subject to registration. The programme will combine basketball with music, culture, fashion and entertainment, and will include the finals of the neighbourhood tournament held in Ziguinchor, Saint-Louis, Thiès and Dakar.

Fall also pointed to the league’s economic contribution in Senegal over its first four seasons: $250 million to gross domestic product and nearly 40,000 direct and indirect jobs. Those figures help explain the competition among African countries to host BAL events, and strengthen the case for Dakar as Senegal seeks to bring the finals back.
