UEFA Nations League: Jorge Jesus responds to Cristiano Ronaldo

Jorge Jesus has given a brief first response to Cristiano Ronaldo’s statement explaining his departure from Portugal during the Nations League.

Jorge Jesus has responded briefly to Cristiano Ronaldo’s long statement about his departure from Portugal during the UEFA Nations League. The coach was approached while returning home after attending Portugal’s Under-21 match in Leiria. He said he had not yet read Ronaldo’s communication and declined to discuss its contents. “I was in Leiria for the national team’s match. I am now going to read the statement. I have nothing to say,” Jesus said.

Ronaldo’s statement set out his version of the dispute with the Portugal coach. The forward said Jesus had failed to keep his word after asking him to warm up during the Nations League match in Norway, where Portugal won 2-1. Ronaldo said he was ultimately not brought on and accused the coach of not respecting the commitment made to him.

The Portugal captain described truth as the most important part of personal relationships, even when it causes pain. He said he chose to leave the squad rather than wait for what he regarded as another failure to honour the coach’s word. His account made the decision to depart the camp part of a wider disagreement about communication and expectations, rather than an unexplained absence.

Ronaldo also disclosed that he had made an unusual request during his discussions with Jesus. He wanted the coach to read an eight-point statement written by Ronaldo himself. The proposed text included an apology for making a player of the stature of Pelé or Diego Maradona warm up without then entering the match. It also said Jesus would not repeat that decision if given the opportunity to make it again.

The wording placed Ronaldo’s status at the centre of the dispute. By invoking Pelé and Maradona, the requested statement presented the incident as one involving a player of exceptional standing. Ronaldo’s communication therefore addressed both the specific decision in Norway and the way he believed his importance should have been acknowledged within the national team.

Jesus had appeared to leave the door open to Ronaldo’s return at the end of the previous international window. The coach said there was no resentment and described the episode as a misunderstanding that could be resolved easily. He indicated that Ronaldo would be called up for the next international window if he wanted to return, while stressing that the decision would belong to the player.

The coach had been less receptive when asked whether he would apologise. His latest comments do not add to that earlier position. Jesus has not publicly answered Ronaldo’s allegations, rejected the account of the warm-up incident or addressed the eight-point statement. His only immediate response was that he would first read the communication before saying anything further.

Ronaldo, for his part, rejected the idea that the dispute represented the end of his Portugal career. He said he remained available after serving any suspension that might be imposed, provided he was physically fit and playing for his club. He also said he hoped to be scoring goals at that stage. His stated intention is to return to Portugal duty and compete for victories, leaving the next step dependent on his condition, club activity and willingness to rejoin the squad.
