Amine Gouiri injury adds to Marseille’s concerns

Marseille are facing a second injury concern during the international break after Amine Gouiri was forced off while representing Algeria. The forward’s condition and possible absence remain unclear, giving coach Bruno Genesio another fitness issue to manage before the club returns to competition. Gouiri is the latest Marseille player affected after the loss of Derek Cornelius.

Gouiri lasted 18 minutes of Algeria’s Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifying match against Zambia in Tizi Ouzou on Friday. Medical staff attended to his right leg, but the former Rennes player could not continue and Amin Chiakha took his place. Algeria were leading 1-0 at that point, having scored through Hadjam in the second minute.

Cornelius suffered a serious hip injury during a Canada training session, and Marseille said on Friday that the nature of the problem pointed to a lengthy spell out. Gouiri’s case has not yet been defined in the same way, with no diagnosis or timetable provided. Marseille are due back in Ligue 1 at Troyes on October 11, in the sixth round. His availability will be another issue for the club to resolve before that fixture.
