Amine Gouiri injury deepens Marseille’s early-season crisis

Amine Gouiri’s injury has added another problem for Marseille, with the club already second from bottom in Ligue 1. The Algeria international was forced off during the international break, leaving head coach Bruno Genesio concerned about one of his team’s main attacking options.

Gouiri lasted only 18 minutes of Algeria’s 3-1 victory over Zambia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. He left the field with an apparent thigh issue, and Algeria coach Brahim Hemdani later confirmed that the Marseille forward was experiencing discomfort in his left quadriceps. No timeframe for his return has been established.

The uncertainty comes at a difficult moment for OM. Marseille have lost their last five matches in all competitions and have collected only three points in Ligue 1, putting them in the second-last position. Gouiri’s possible absence would further reduce Genesio’s choices at centre-forward, where Neal Maupay and Faris Moumbagna are the other options identified.

Gouiri joined Marseille from Rennes in the 2024-25 season for €19 million and is listed as a 26-year-old centre-forward. His availability will now be assessed after the Algeria setback, while Marseille try to halt a run that has left them near the bottom of the league.
