André Onana backs Simon Ngapandndouetmbou’s rise

André Onana has backed Simon Ngapandndouetmbou as Cameroon’s next major goalkeeper after his Ivory Coast display.

André Onana has renewed his support for Simon Ngapandndouetmbou, saying the young Cameroon goalkeeper is already close to being ready for a leading role with the Indomitable Lions. The endorsement adds weight to calls for the Montpellier player to receive greater responsibility in the national team.

Ngapandndouetmbou strengthened his case during Cameroon’s friendly against Côte d’Ivoire on 3 October at Ebimpé Stadium. Introduced after having remained on the bench during the qualifiers under David Pagou, he produced a composed performance and stopped Yan Diomandé from taking an equalising opportunity in the 76th minute. His authority when leaving his line and accuracy with the ball also stood out.

The 23-year-old has made seven Ligue 2 appearances this season, conceding five goals and recording four clean sheets. Those figures support the view that he is ready to challenge for the national-team starting position, rather than merely serve as an understudy.

Onana had already identified Ngapandndouetmbou as a goalkeeper with the potential for a distinguished career while the player was still at Olympique de Marseille. He also recognised that football eventually passes from one generation to the next, suggesting that Cameroon’s established number one will not remain in the position indefinitely. Ngapandndouetmbou first joined the national setup in September 2022, made his debut against China on 31 March 2026 and then faced Côte d’Ivoire.
