Azzedine Ounahi set for Panathinaikos return
Girona and Panathinaikos have reached a verbal deal for Ounahi to return on loan with a €25m purchase obligation.
Azzedine Ounahi is set to return to Panathinaikos after Girona and the Greek club reached a definitive verbal agreement. The move would bring the Morocco international back to Athens, where he previously spent a season on loan, and give Panathinaikos an experienced central midfielder for the next stage of its campaign.
The agreement covers a loan followed by a mandatory €25 million purchase, with a four-year arrangement planned. Panathinaikos has also offered Ounahi an annual salary of €2.7 million, which would make him the highest-paid player in the squad. The deal remains subject to the completion of the administrative process.
Ajax had also pressed to sign the 26-year-old, but Ounahi opted for a return to a club he already knows. He is currently registered with Girona, who signed him from Marseille for €6 million in the 2025-26 season. Marseille had previously acquired him from Angers for €8 million in 2022-23, after his earlier move from Panathinaikos.
Panathinaikos is now working to complete the formalities quickly so Ounahi can be added to its UEFA list in time for the club’s European campaign. His return would renew a partnership that produced a successful loan spell in Athens during the 2024-25 season.
