Ballon d'Or 2026: Sadio Mané Returns on Official 30-Man List

Sadio Mané has been named among the 30 nominees for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, confirming his return to the highest individual award in football. The Senegal forward’s selection follows a season in which he helped his country win the Africa Cup of Nations and Al-Nassr claim the Saudi Arabian championship. The list was announced on Tuesday, 8 September, ahead of the ceremony in London on 26 October.

The nomination represents a major return for Mané, who had not appeared among the Ballon d’Or nominees for four years. He is now 34 and has been shortlisted for the fifth time in his career. His previous placements were 23rd in 2017, 22nd in 2018, fourth in 2019 and second in 2022, when he finished behind Karim Benzema. His 2022 result remains the best by a Senegalese player in the award’s voting.

Mané’s strongest case this year began with Senegal’s campaign at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. He played all seven matches, scoring twice and providing three assists as the Lions reached the final against the hosts. Senegal won after extra time. Mané was initially named the tournament’s best player, although the Confederation of African Football’s appeals jury later awarded that individual prize to a Moroccan player in a decision issued in March.

His influence in the tournament extended beyond his direct numbers. The reports describe him as Senegal’s leader during the campaign and highlight his conduct during a chaotic final. He was also credited with establishing a new Africa Cup of Nations record as the competition’s leading assist provider, with nine assists overall. His contribution formed the central part of the case for his inclusion on the global shortlist.

Mané also delivered a title-winning club season with Al-Nassr. Across 36 matches in all competitions, he recorded 14 goals and nine assists. In the Saudi Pro League, his return was 10 goals and six assists in 25 matches. Al-Nassr won the Saudi Arabian championship for the first time in seven years, and the club did not lose any league match in which Mané appeared. The campaign added a domestic title to his international success.

The 2026 shortlist also includes Ousmane Dembélé, the reigning Ballon d’Or holder, and Lionel Messi. Messi, 39, returned to the nominees after scoring eight goals and supplying four assists during the 2026 World Cup, where he was a finalist. It is the 17th nomination of his career, and he remains the record holder with eight Ballon d’Or victories.

Kylian Mbappé is also among the contenders, after becoming the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer with 22 goals in the reports’ account. The field includes several members of the world champion side, including Barcelona players Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsí, as well as Rodrigo Hernández, who moved from Manchester City to Barcelona during the summer. Paris Saint-Germain’s European champions include Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, whose Champions League season also placed him in contention.

Mané is one of only two African players on the 30-man list, alongside Morocco and Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi. His selection keeps Senegal’s representation prominent in the award’s history. He joins Kalidou Koulibaly, El Hadj Diouf and Pape Bouba Diop as the only Senegalese players to have appeared among the 30 nominees. It also puts him in the discussion for a third African Ballon d’Or, with compatriots Édouard Mendy and Ismaïla Sarr identified as competitors for that continental honour.

The 30-player list was assembled by members of the France Football and L’Équipe editorial teams, with assistance from former jurors and UEFA ambassadors. The final winner will be chosen by an international panel of journalists. For Mané, the vote follows a season defined by Senegal’s continental title, his decisive involvement at the Africa Cup of Nations and Al-Nassr’s first Saudi championship in seven years. The final award will be presented in London on 26 October.
