Ballon d’Or: Kylian Mbappé confirmed in the 2026 race
Kylian Mbappé has strengthened his Ballon d’Or case with 58 goals last season and a hat-trick for Real Madrid at the start of the new campaign.
Kylian Mbappé has emerged as one of the leading names in the Ballon d’Or race after a spectacular start to the new season with Real Madrid. The French forward scored a hat-trick against Real Sociedad in his first match of the campaign at the Santiago Bernabéu. The performance immediately renewed the discussion around his chances of succeeding Ousmane Dembélé as the world’s best player.
The Ballon d’Or ceremony is scheduled for 26 October in London, marking the first time the event will be held in the United Kingdom. The award will be decided after a season in which Mbappé combined major individual numbers with a strong World Cup campaign. The voting process involves 100 journalists, and his early performances have given him a fresh opportunity to influence the discussion before the final decision.
Mbappé finished the 2025-2026 season with 58 goals across club and international football. He scored 42 times for Real Madrid and added 16 goals for France. At the World Cup, he finished as the tournament’s leading scorer with 10 goals and won the Golden Boot. Those figures place him among the most productive players in the world, even though Real Madrid did not win the major trophies expected of them.
His club record was also strong enough to bring individual recognition. Mbappé claimed the Pichichi award twice, adding further weight to a statistical case that has remained powerful despite the lack of a major team title. His numbers offer a direct argument for the award, particularly because he was decisive for both his club and country over the course of the season.
The opening match against Real Sociedad added a new element to that argument. Scoring three times at the Bernabéu allowed Mbappé to begin the campaign with an immediately visible statement. The performance was highlighted by the Madrid-based newspaper AS, which presented him as a player turning his attention towards the Ballon d’Or. His form since the start of the season has reinforced the sense that he has carried his previous level into the new campaign.
There has also been a change in the internal outlook at Real Madrid. Mbappé is understood to have recognised that individual honours depend partly on the team’s success and on the contribution of his teammates. The pursuit of the Ballon d’Or therefore sits alongside the club’s effort to compete for the biggest collective trophies. A stronger team campaign would address the principal weakness in his candidacy, while his personal production has already supplied the statistical foundation.
The race remains open. Rodri, Harry Kane, Fabián and Lamine Yamal are among the other prominent contenders mentioned in the debate. Spain’s World Cup triumph gives weight to the cases of players connected with that success, but a national team title does not automatically settle the Ballon d’Or vote. The criteria leave room for individual performances, team achievements and the overall influence of a player’s season to be weighed together.
Mbappé’s next task is to maintain the level that has placed him back at the centre of the conversation. His 58-goal season, World Cup Golden Boot and Bernabéu hat-trick have made his candidacy difficult to ignore, but the missing major club trophies remain an important part of the assessment. The Ballon d’Or ceremony in London will determine whether his individual impact can overcome that disadvantage and deliver the award he has pursued since establishing himself among football’s elite.
