Bordeaux-Bègles regain momentum with heavy Lyon win

Bordeaux-Bègles strengthened their home record by beating Lyon 51-28 in the Top 14’s fifth round.

Bordeaux-Bègles have steadied their early Top 14 campaign by maintaining their perfect home start. The result underlines the sharp contrast in their form: the Girondins have struggled away from home but remain extremely difficult to beat at Stade Chaban-Delmas.

UBB defeated Lyon 51-28 in the opening match of the fifth round, recording their third home victory of the season. They led by 32 points at half-time and finished with eight tries, including two from Cameron Woki. Lyon scored four tries, but their response came too late to alter the outcome.

Bordeaux-Bègles established control almost immediately. Nicolas Depoortere opened the scoring inside four minutes before Woki crossed from a quickly taken penalty. Salesi Rayasi then added two tries, while Tom Willis and Lasha Pkhakadze also went over before the interval. Hugo Reus completed the home side’s scoring after the break.

Lyon’s Jiuta Wainiqolo, Thomas Moukoro and Thibaut Regard found openings, with Liam Allen adding the final try beyond the siren. Their late efforts showed some improvement after the interval, but they could not disguise the scale of Bordeaux-Bègles’ dominance. For UBB, the win provides another strong home performance as they seek greater consistency across the season.
