Pape Thiaw emerges as Ghana Black Stars candidate

Former Senegal coach Pape Thiaw is being considered as Ghana weighs a new technical leader for the Black Stars.

Pape Thiaw is under consideration for the Ghana coaching job as the Black Stars begin the process of identifying a new technical leader. His name has emerged during an institutional crisis surrounding the national team, with Ghana’s Sports Ministry ordering the removal of the existing technical staff.

Thiaw is being assessed alongside other candidates, with his recent work in international football strengthening his profile. He led Senegal from 2024 to 2026, winning the most recent Africa Cup of Nations and taking the Lions to the final of the 2025 tournament in Morocco. Senegal also secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup during his tenure.

The development comes after Thiaw was dismissed following Senegal’s World Cup campaign. A move to Ghana would therefore give him the chance to return quickly to international management, this time with a team undergoing a major reset. The Black Stars’ next appointment will follow the ordered departure of their current technical structure, but no decision on Thiaw’s candidacy has been announced.

His experience with a recent continental champion makes him one of the profiles being reviewed as Ghana considers the direction of its senior national side.
