Bruno Genesio questions Marseille's season ambitions

Three straight defeats have left Marseille coach Bruno Genesio questioning the club’s targets and readiness.

Bruno Genesio is increasingly unsettled by Marseille’s direction after a difficult start to the season. The coach has indicated that the club’s stated ambitions must be made clearer, particularly as the squad has been weakened by departures and no new players have arrived. Marseille’s need to reduce its wage bill has limited its ability to rebuild.

The defeat at Rennes on Friday was Marseille’s third in a row. The run began with a 2-0 loss at Monaco and continued with a 3-2 home defeat against Paris FC, following the opening 4-0 victory over Strasbourg. The latest result leaves the team struggling to match the leading sides, with a demanding schedule ahead: a Europa League trip to Besiktas comes before Paris Saint-Germain visit the Velodrome next weekend.

Genesio has avoided setting a specific target himself, saying that the club’s objectives are for its leadership to define. That position contrasts with Stéphane Richard’s indication that European qualification remains an ambition. The coach has also stressed that Marseille have had to improvise with the current squad and that players cannot immediately be expected to adopt unfamiliar demands. He acknowledged that adapting will require time, while making clear that he does not know how much time will be available.
