Bryan Mbeumo and Manchester United exit Carabao Cup
Bryan Mbeumo came off the bench as Manchester United lost 3-2 to Brighton in the Carabao Cup third round.
Manchester United’s Carabao Cup campaign is over after Brighton overturned an early deficit to win at Old Trafford. Bryan Mbeumo started on the bench and could not change the outcome after entering the match, while manager Michael Carrick came under further pressure.
United appeared in control after Shea Lacey put them ahead in the eighth minute. Mason Mount added a second two minutes later, giving the hosts a two-goal advantage. Brighton reduced the gap through Charalampos Kostoulas in first-half stoppage time, keeping the visitors in contention before the interval.
The comeback was completed after the break. Pascal Groß levelled in the 65th minute following a United mistake in possession, and Maxim De Cuyper scored four minutes later to put Brighton ahead. United were unable to respond, despite Mbeumo’s introduction, and left the competition in the third round.
The elimination follows Manchester United’s defeat by Manchester City the previous weekend and increases the scrutiny on Carrick. Brighton advanced after recovering from the difficult opening spell, while United’s two-goal lead ultimately proved insufficient at home.
