Carlos Espí stars late as Barça weighs Raphinha renewal

Carlos Espí is rapidly becoming Real Madrid’s decisive late option, while Barcelona has begun work on extending Raphinha’s stay. The Brazilian remains under contract until 2028, but the club wants greater clarity after initial discussions with his representative produced encouraging signs without an agreement.

Madrid defeated Elche 3-2 after surrendering a two-goal advantage. Espí came on for only his second decisive contribution of the early Liga campaign, scoring in the 91st minute after receiving a pass from Kylian Mbappé. Across four league appearances, the 21-year-old Spanish centre-forward has played just 25 minutes and scored twice, with each goal securing three points.

Espí’s emergence has added to the attention around a player listed with Levante UD and valued at €20 million. His profile also records a muscle tear. His late impact has made him one of the most notable substitutes of the opening weeks, even though his playing time remains limited.

At Barcelona, Raphinha has indicated that he feels settled and committed to the club’s project. His wife attended the meeting with sporting director Deco and the player’s agent, and the discussions were viewed positively. Barcelona now intends to move the renewal forward, despite having no immediate contractual pressure.
