Coco Gauff survives scare to reach US Open semi-finals

Coco Gauff has reached the US Open semi-finals after escaping a major scare against Mirra Andreeva. The fourth seed will face Elena Rybakina in the last four, while Andreeva missed the opportunity to claim her first semi-final place at Flushing Meadows.

Gauff recovered to win 2-6, 7-6, 6-2 in two hours and 21 minutes. Andreeva, ranked fifth, controlled the opening set and held a 4-1 advantage before taking it in less than half an hour. Gauff then fought back, but the Russian repeatedly answered her breaks and forced a tie-break in the second set.

Andreeva moved within two points of victory in that tie-break, creating two match points, including one on her own serve. Gauff saved both and took the final three points to level the match. That escape shifted the momentum decisively. After a close start to the decider, Gauff broke in the third game and later added another break without losing a point before serving out the match on her second chance.

The result sends Gauff into the final four alongside Rybakina. The other semi-finalists complete a top-four line-up that has not occurred at the US Open since 1975, when Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova were among the leading seeds.
