Cristiano Ronaldo handed Portugal suspension and fine

Cristiano Ronaldo is banned from Portugal duty for 30 days and fined €255 after leaving the squad.

Cristiano Ronaldo will be unable to represent Portugal for 30 days after leaving the national-team camp without authorisation. The punishment keeps open a dispute with coach Jorge Jesus, while federation officials continue working to bring the captain back into the squad.

The Portuguese federation’s disciplinary commission also imposed a €255 fine. Ronaldo’s departure followed his replacement against Wales and his omission from the team throughout the match in Norway. He had shown his displeasure before leaving the group, after Jesus had indicated that he would take part in training before Ronaldo ultimately left the stadium.

Ronaldo later set out his position in a letter, criticising Jesus for failing to keep his word and saying he would accept the disciplinary consequences. The suspension now applies to his Portugal duties, but a return will also depend on whether he is prepared to work again with a coach he has publicly challenged.

Federation president Pedro Proença has maintained contact with the forward and wants him back in the national team. Jesus remains willing to select Ronaldo when he is fit to play. A return during the November international window remains possible, depending partly on when the ban begins, but the dispute over Ronaldo’s role and the coach’s authority still needs to be resolved.
