Cristiano Ronaldo’s nightmare as Al-Nassr lose in AFC Champions League

Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to the elite Asian Champions League ended in humiliation on Tuesday as Al-Nassr were beaten 4-0 by Al-Ain in the United Arab Emirates. The Saudi club conceded twice to Houssine Rahimi, then allowed his brother Soufiane Rahimi and Giakoumakis to complete a heavy victory. It was Al-Nassr’s largest defeat in the competition since the tournament was created in 2003.

The loss was especially damaging because Al-Nassr had entered the match with a strong domestic position. The Riyadh club is third in the Saudi Pro League after seven rounds, only two points behind leaders Al-Hilal. That league form had offered a more positive backdrop for a campaign built around Ronaldo, but the first continental test produced a complete collapse rather than a close contest.

Al-Nassr’s attacking names were all in the starting line-up. Ronaldo began the match alongside João Félix and Sadio Mané, yet the visitors could not find a goal. Al-Ain’s defence held firm while the home side converted its opportunities, with Houssine Rahimi scoring twice before Soufiane Rahimi and Giakoumakis added the other goals.

Ronaldo’s frustration became visible after Al-Ain’s third goal. The Portuguese forward turned towards his own teammates and made repeated gestures of anger before also protesting with the referee. The reaction added to a night in which Al-Nassr were already struggling to impose themselves, and it placed the captain’s conduct at the centre of the aftermath.

The most serious incident came when Ronaldo tried to create an opening and became involved with an opposing player. He seized the Al-Ain player and threw him forcefully to the ground. The referee did not issue a sanction for the act, allowing Ronaldo to remain on the pitch as Al-Nassr attempted to limit the damage.

The hostility around the match had started before kick-off. Al-Ain supporters directed chants of “Messi, Messi, Messi” at Ronaldo. He answered by applauding ironically from the field, but the exchange set the tone for an evening in which the 41-year-old was repeatedly drawn into confrontations. He finished without a goal and with his team suffering a defeat that cannot be explained by the pressure from the stands alone.

The result also intensified questions about Ronaldo’s current place in Al-Nassr’s project. His latest World Cup brought two goals, and he has been outside the Ballon d’Or discussion since 2022, but his club matches remain the main stage for his influence. The criticism after this defeat focused on his output and his effect on the team, with some commentators describing him as close to a burden. The match against Al-Ain gave those arguments fresh momentum, even though it was only the opening round of the continental campaign.

Coach Ange Postecoglou defended his captain after the final whistle. He said Ronaldo had already scored three goals, had enjoyed a limited preparation and remained an example because of the sacrifices made throughout his career. Postecoglou accepted responsibility for the result and rejected the idea that the players were to blame, saying they had shown commitment and character. His response placed the failure on the coaching staff rather than on Ronaldo or the rest of the squad.

Al-Nassr still have seven matches in which to repair their position in the Asian competition, but the scale of the opening defeat leaves no room for complacency. Their domestic campaign remains close to the top, with only two points separating them from Al-Hilal after seven matches. The immediate challenge is to separate that solid league standing from a continental night defined by four conceded goals, a record defeat in the modern tournament and Ronaldo’s loss of control.
