David Pagou says Cameroon’s win was the priority

David Pagou said Cameroon achieved the main purpose of their opening match by beating Comoros, placing the three points above the quality of the performance. The coach acknowledged that some aspects worked while others did not, but viewed the victory as a positive start to the campaign.

Pagou said the squad had managed only one intensive training session before the match, leaving the players short of rhythm and understanding. A set-piece goal helped settle the team and changed the direction of the game.

The coach also defended his substitutions, which added pace and directness and helped Cameroon take control. He said all 26 players in the squad were prepared to enter with clear instructions, allowing him to adjust the team as the match developed.

Bryan Mbeumo received particular praise after scoring while wearing the captain’s armband for the first time. Pagou said the forward showed leadership by encouraging his teammates and taking responsibility at a key moment. He also commended the midfield pairing of Avom and Naso. Christian Kofane was withdrawn after feeling a minor discomfort, with the staff choosing not to take a risk.
