Diane Parry shows resilience to reach US Open round two
Diane Parry recovered from a poor start against Viktorija Golubic after winning her first WTA title in Monterrey.
Diane Parry has reached the US Open second round less than 24 hours after securing the first WTA title of her career in Monterrey. The Frenchwoman’s ability to recover in New York keeps her campaign alive despite the demanding turnaround between the two tournaments.
Parry defeated Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic 7-5, 6-4 in the first round. She made a difficult start, falling 0-3 after surrendering two breaks of serve, but gradually regained control. From 2-4, she won five of the next six games to overturn the opening set and take it 7-5.
The second set was more evenly balanced, with neither player able to create a decisive advantage for most of the contest. Parry then produced her strongest pressure at the end, reaching 0-40 on Golubic’s serve and completing the victory with her first match point. The result came after Parry had travelled about 3,000 kilometres from Monterrey to New York.
Parry is through to the next round while Loïs Boisson and Elsa Jacquemot have already been eliminated, making her the first of the three French players in action so far to advance. She will face either Romania’s Sorana Cirstea or Austria’s Julia Grabher. Leolia Jeanjean, the fourth French player in the field, begins her tournament on Tuesday against Dutch qualifier Arantxa Rus, ranked 204th in the world.
