Didier Deschamps marked by two football family tragedies
Didier Deschamps supported Eric Roy’s family before losing his own mother during the same World Cup.
Didier Deschamps was affected by two personal tragedies during the same World Cup period, first offering support to the family of former coach Eric Roy and later mourning the death of his own mother. The episodes highlighted a personal bond that extended beyond football’s competitive demands.
Eric Roy died in June after battling illness. Roy’s wife, Loetitia, said Deschamps contacted the family three times during the tournament, despite the pressure surrounding France’s campaign. The two men were not especially close and only saw each other occasionally, making the messages particularly meaningful to her.
Deschamps also paid tribute publicly to Roy, remembering him as a deeply humane person and a highly capable coach. He recalled Roy’s work at Brest, where he guided the club to Champions League qualification, and noted that he had presented him with the UNFP Ligue 1 Coach of the Year award two years earlier. He also praised Roy’s determination during his illness.
Later in the competition, Deschamps lost his mother. Loetitia Roy then returned the support he had shown her family. The exchange linked two moments of grief and underlined the relationship between members of the French football community beyond their roles on the pitch.
