Dino Toppmöller explains his sudden Lens departure
The former Lens coach says he was dismissed after refusing to remove assistant Nelson Morgado.
Dino Toppmöller has attributed his abrupt departure from Lens to his refusal to dismiss long-time assistant Nelson Morgado. He said sporting director Jean-Louis Leca and general manager Benjamin Parrot regarded Morgado as overly demanding, too vocal and a source of friction within the club. Toppmöller rejected that assessment and said he saw no serious misconduct that would justify removing his assistant.
The German coach left on September 15 after only six competitive matches in charge. Lens had won three of those games, but just one came in Ligue 1, making for an uneven opening to the campaign. His short tenure had also included victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the Trophée des champions.
Toppmöller said the two executives presented Morgado’s removal as essential and warned that refusing would lead to the end of his own tenure. He considered the situation unacceptable and chose to stand by his assistant, even at the risk of losing his position. His account places the disagreement over the coaching staff at the centre of his early exit, rather than presenting it solely as a consequence of Lens’ mixed results.
After Toppmöller’s dismissal, Lens appointed Yannick Cahuzac as interim coach. Cahuzac had previously worked as an assistant and was close to Leca.
