Ethan Hayter's red-jersey gamble falls short at Vuelta
Ethan Hayter missed the Vuelta red jersey after a breakaway gamble and now sits 13th overall, 29 seconds back.
Ethan Hayter’s attempt to take control of the Vuelta did not succeed, but the British rider chose an aggressive route rather than wait for a sprint he considered difficult to win. His breakaway move leaves him outside the race lead as the course turns toward more demanding terrain.
The Soudal-Quick Step rider joined the escape on stage two from Monaco to Manosque and pushed on alone to collect six bonus seconds at the intermediate sprint. That briefly made him the virtual leader. The plan unravelled during a hectic finale after Wout van Aert attacked and Hayter was caught. Matthew Brennan won the stage in the sprint, while Hayter finished 80th, 31 seconds behind.
Hayter is now 13th overall, 29 seconds behind Tadej Pogacar. Pogacar had taken the opening time trial by nine hundredths of a second and retains the advantage in the general classification. Hayter said he had little left for such a demanding finish after spending the day in the breakaway, including enough energy to improve his position in the final kilometres.
The decision still gave him a rare opportunity to fight for the red jersey on a Grand Tour. The race reaches an uphill finish at Font Romeu on Monday, a stage that presents a tougher test for Hayter after his long effort in the escape.
