Ethan Mbappé faces Lille setback after Gill signing

Lille’s arrival of Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill could unsettle Ethan Mbappé as he begins his third season.

Ethan Mbappé’s position at Lille could be affected by the club’s decision to bring in Orlando Gill, with the goalkeeper’s arrival threatening to disturb the young Frenchman’s balance within the squad. Mbappé is entering his third professional campaign with the northern club, where he has played since leaving Paris Saint-Germain’s academy in July 2024.

Lille have reached an agreement with San Lorenzo for Gill, a 26-year-old Paraguay international. The transfer is valued at about €4 million, and he is expected in Lille early next week to complete a contract lasting either four or five years. His arrival will create competition with Berke Özer in goal and forms part of the changes being made under coach Davide Ancelotti, Carlo Ancelotti’s son.

Mbappé, now 19, had been expected to take on greater responsibility during the 2026-27 season after two campaigns with the club that gave him his professional opportunity. The latest recruitment, however, may make it harder for him to settle into Lille’s plans, although the available facts do not specify how his playing role will change.

Gill also carries a recent international controversy involving Mbappé’s older brother, Kylian. After France defeated Paraguay in the 2026 World Cup round of 16, Gill expressed disappointment that Kylian had not greeted him. The incident was followed by criticism of the Real Madrid forward in Paraguay, including racist remarks from a Paraguayan lawmaker.
