Jorge Jesus keeps Ronaldo dispute alive with terse reply
Portugal coach Jorge Jesus has kept the Ronaldo dispute alive with a terse response after the forward’s criticism.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s future with Portugal remains uncertain after Jorge Jesus answered the forward’s criticism with a brief and carefully limited response. The coach said he had read Ronaldo’s communiqué, but added that his focus was his daily work at the federation and the national team. He offered no further comment, leaving the dispute open to interpretation and drawing criticism from some Ronaldo supporters.
The tension followed Ronaldo’s frustration over his limited involvement in the Nations League. He left the Portugal camp after remaining unused in the second match. In his communiqué, the 41-year-old accepted that the Portuguese federation could punish him while also revealing an eight-point apology that Jesus had allegedly been expected to read publicly. One proposed passage compared the decision to warm up a player of Pelé or Diego Maradona’s stature without bringing him on. Jesus did not deliver that text and instead maintained his authority over the team before Ronaldo departed.
Jesus has nevertheless left open a route back. After Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway, he said Ronaldo must decide his own future and described the episode as a misunderstanding that could be resolved. Portugal reached the Nations League quarter-finals as the first qualified team, completing the international window with four wins. Jesus intends to include Ronaldo in the squad for November’s matches against Denmark on 14 November and Wales on 17 November, with the player already informed and responsible for deciding whether to attend.
