Ethan Mbappé sent off after elbow against Betis
Ethan Mbappé saw red for an elbow against Betis and will miss Lille’s next trip to Arsenal.
LOSC Lille will be without Ethan Mbappé for the club’s next trip to Arsenal after the France-Cameroon winger was sent off against Real Betis. The dismissal came after he struck Betis defender Natan in the face with an elbow shortly after the Spanish side moved ahead for the third time.
Lille had led 2-1 at half-time but ended the match on the wrong side of a 3-2 result. Mbappé’s challenge was not punished immediately, but a video review led referee Georgi Kabakov to show him a straight red card. The 19-year-old now faces an automatic suspension for the Arsenal fixture and could receive a longer ban.
The incident overshadowed a promising start from the Lille player, whose early-season form had earned him a place in the team. Before his dismissal, Mbappé created Lille’s opening goal with the assist for Ayase Ueda. His sending-off then left the club without a key attacking option as Betis completed its comeback.
Mbappé joined Lille from Paris Saint-Germain’s under-19 side in the 2024-25 season. He came through PSG’s youth system after beginning at AS Bondy and is listed as a right winger.
