Ethan Mbappé sent off as Ancelotti demands discipline

Lille will be without Ethan Mbappé for their Champions League trip to Arsenal on October 13 after the teenager was dismissed for an elbow. The winger could also face a longer suspension from UEFA, leaving the club to manage the consequences of a disciplinary lapse in a match it was trying to recover.

Lille led 2-1 at half-time, but Marc Bartra equalised with a header in the 49th minute and Troy Parrott put the opposition ahead four minutes later. After the third goal, Brazilian defender Natan provoked Mbappé, who responded with an elbow. The referee showed him a straight red card after a VAR review, and Lille had to complete the game with 10 players.

The incident overshadowed a strong opening from the 19-year-old right winger. Mbappé created Ayase Ueda’s goal in the 12th minute and had shown technical quality before losing his temper. His dismissal made Lille’s attempt to find an equaliser more difficult.

Davide Ancelotti, managing his first Champions League match as a head coach, did not single out Mbappé for condemnation. Instead, he said the squad must improve its handling of frustration and emotions, adding that the young player would learn from the episode. Ancelotti framed that improvement as part of the team’s daily training work.
