Ethan Mbappé warned by Ancelotti after red card

Lille will be without Ethan Mbappé for their next Champions League fixture at Arsenal after the winger was dismissed against Real Betis. Coach Davide Ancelotti used the incident to call for greater control from his squad, while Mbappé faces the possibility of a longer UEFA suspension.

Lille lost 3-2 after leading 2-1 at half-time in the opening round. Mbappé, 19, had set up Ayase Ueda for Lille’s first goal in the 12th minute, but was sent off after an exchange with Real Betis defender Natan. As the Spanish side celebrated, Natan spoke to Mbappé, who responded with an elbow to the Brazilian’s face. A VAR review led to a direct red card for Mbappé, while Natan received a yellow card for provocation.

The dismissal came after Betis had restored parity through Marc Bartra’s header in the 49th minute. Troy Parrott then put the visitors ahead four minutes later with a shot across goal. Lille played the final 40 minutes, including added time, with 10 men and could not find an equaliser.

Ancelotti said his message was aimed at the whole group rather than only Mbappé, but acknowledged that the young player would learn from the episode. Mbappé is suspended for the Arsenal match on 13 October, with UEFA’s disciplinary process able to add further games.
