Fouzi Lekjaa renews Morocco’s push for 2030 World Cup final

Morocco is continuing its campaign to secure the 2030 World Cup final, with federation president Fouzi Lekjaa framing the issue as a matter of African representation. He said Morocco should have the opportunity to host the tournament’s showpiece for the second time in the continent’s history, alongside co-hosts Spain and Portugal.

Lekjaa had previously indicated that the final would be played in Casablanca, before FIFA challenged that claim. He later referred to Benslimane province as the intended host, but has now stressed that no final venue has been decided and that the established procedures remain in place. He said the three host countries should work through cooperation rather than competition.

The position keeps Morocco’s lobbying active ahead of the FIFA Congress scheduled for Rabat in March. Lekjaa, who also serves as Morocco’s minister delegate for the budget, is backing FIFA president Gianni Infantino for re-election in March 2027. Some observers believe Infantino could use a successful re-election to announce a second World Cup final in Africa.

That would follow the 2010 final in South Africa and give the continent two finals within a single century. For now, however, Morocco’s role is to press its case while FIFA’s process for selecting the 2030 final venue remains open.
