Greece stun Germany to seize Nations League advantage

Greece moved five points clear of Germany in Nations League Group 2 after a disciplined 1-0 victory in Augsburg. The result leaves Germany third, three points behind the Netherlands and unable to build on their opening-day draw with the Dutch. Greece now hold a significant advantage over one of the group’s leading sides.

Germany dominated possession, seeing more than 75% of the ball, but struggled to turn that control into a breakthrough. Greece’s defensive structure remained intact through the first half and continued to frustrate the hosts after the interval. A further effort on target from Bambasé Conté tested the visitors, while Fotis Ioannidis offered Greece a threat when they broke forward.

The decisive moment came in the 74th minute. Dimitrios Kourbelis, introduced shortly before scoring, struck from just outside the area and saw his effort deflect off Joshua Kimmich. The touch sent the ball beyond goalkeeper Alexander Nübel and gave Greece the lead. Germany pressed during the closing stages but could not find an equaliser, allowing Ivan Jovanović’s side to claim a result that reshapes the group standings.
