Mark van Bommel set to meet Zinedine Zidane again

Belgium-France will renew the meeting between Mark van Bommel and Zinedine Zidane, bringing together two players whose reputations were built in sharply different ways. Van Bommel remains associated with a highly confrontational style, while Zidane is remembered as one of the most gifted and polished footballers of the 21st century.

The Dutch midfielder played during a period when the Netherlands remained competitive but was not always admired for elegance. Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie were among the country’s leading artists, yet several Oranje figures were also linked to heavy fouls, disputes with referees and deliberate disruption. Nigel de Jong’s challenge in the 2010 World Cup final against Spain is one example, although Van Bommel’s critics regarded him as an even more persistent offender.

Van Bommel’s career disciplinary record underlines the contrast between his image and his punishment. He collected 155 yellow cards but only 11 red cards, despite repeated accusations of violent fouls and conspicuous anti-play. Zidane, by comparison, finished his playing career with 14 dismissals. That statistic gives the reunion an unusual edge: the player viewed as the cleaner footballer was sent off more often than the midfielder widely accused of pushing the limits.
