Harry Kane backed for Ballon d’Or on age argument

Harry Kane has been placed first in a ranking of the leading candidates for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, ahead of Rodri, Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal. The unusual element of the case is not only his production: at 33, Kane may be approaching his strongest and perhaps final opportunity to win the prize. The “if not now, when?” argument gives his candidacy an emotional edge, although it is not an official criterion.

Kane’s sporting record provides a strong case without that career narrative. He has scored 61 goals in 51 appearances for Bayern Munich and 73 for club and country combined. He has won two trophies with Bayern, claimed the European Golden Shoe and scored six times at the World Cup, where England finished third. His influence and output have made him a leading contender for the award.

Since the 2022 reforms, voters are required to judge individual performances, decisive impact, collective results and honours, as well as sporting conduct and fair play. Age and the fact that Kane has never won the Ballon d’Or cannot formally improve his standing. The ranking therefore reflects a persuasive story around his career, not a change to the rules. The verdict from the 100 jurors is expected on Oct. 26 in London.
