Igor Paixão left out as Brazil unveil post-World Cup squad

Igor Paixão will have to wait for his Brazil debut after Carlo Ancelotti omitted the Marseille winger from his first squad since the country’s World Cup disappointment. The 26-year-old had been considered a possible beneficiary of the team’s renewal, but did not make the 26-man selection announced on Wednesday.

Ancelotti’s list comes two months after Brazil’s last-16 elimination by Norway. It includes João Pedro, who has started the season strongly with Chelsea, and 19-year-old club-mate Estêvão, who missed the World Cup through injury. Both forwards are now part of the coach’s reshaped group.

Five players have received their first call-up: goalkeepers Pedro Morisco of Coritiba and Otávio of Cruzeiro, PSV Eindhoven centre-back Mauro Júnior, and midfielders Breno Bidon of Corinthians and Gabriel Bontempo of Santos. The established core remains represented by Gabriel, Marquinhos, Bruno Guimarães, Vinícius Júnior and Raphinha.

Neymar is absent after announcing his international retirement, while Casemiro and goalkeeper Alisson were also left out. Ancelotti said the selection combines World Cup players with younger talent and performers from Brazil’s domestic championship, with the next World Cup and Copa América in mind. Brazil will play Australia in Townsville on September 25 and Brisbane on September 29, before facing India in Kolkata on October 3.
