Illias Oumar Dicko, former Mali and Djoliba defender, dies

Malian football is mourning the death of Illias Oumar Dicko, the former Djoliba AC and Mali defender who died in Bamako on Saturday. He was 74 and passed away at the Hôpital du Mali after an illness. His death removes one of the notable figures from Djoliba’s earlier generations and from Mali’s national team history.

Dicko’s route to top-level football took him through Gao, where he spent five years because of administrative circumstances and made a strong impression with Africa Sport de Gao. His career changed after a 1975 meeting with Djoliba. The performance brought him to the attention of club officials, who recognised that the powerful defender belonged in the capital. At Djoliba, he became respected for his physical force, strict approach and ability to strike the ball with power from distance.

He won the Coupe du Mali with Djoliba in 1977 and again in 1979. Dicko became a regular member of the Mali national team from 1978, adding an international dimension to a club career built around Djoliba. He left football in 1981, choosing to end his playing days because of principles connected to injustices in the game.

Dicko remained involved in football after retirement as an active member of the national office of the Union nationale des anciens footballeurs du Mali. His career linked Djoliba’s domestic success, Mali’s national side and the development of football beyond Bamako through his earlier contribution in Gao.
