Ireland and Israel wear black armbands for opposing causes
Ireland and Israel drew 1-1 in Serbia as contrasting political messages overshadowed a tense match played behind closed doors.
The political meaning of Ireland’s meeting with Israel overshadowed the sporting outcome, with both teams using black armbands to express sharply different messages. Ireland wore them in support of the Palestinian cause and to protest the situation in Gaza, while Israel used the gesture to remember those killed in the October 7, 2023 attacks.
The match ended 1-1 at a closed venue in Serbia. Troy Parrott put Ireland ahead from the penalty spot in the 39th minute, but Israel levelled two minutes after half-time when an Oscar Gloukh shot took a deflection and allowed Daniel Peretz to score. Neither side found a second goal despite further chances.
The pre-match ceremony reflected the strained atmosphere. Irish players kept their heads down during Israel’s anthem, while the captains did not exchange the customary handshake or pennants. On the field, 27 fouls and four yellow cards underlined the intensity, including a forceful challenge by Liam Scales on Liel Abada before the interval.
The tension was also reported to have reached the tunnel during half-time, where confrontations allegedly took place, and an Irish staff member was reportedly spat at. The draw settled the football only narrowly; the opposing tributes and the surrounding hostility became the defining features of the encounter.
