Cristiano Ronaldo attacks Jorge Jesus and invokes Pelé
Cristiano Ronaldo has criticised Jorge Jesus after Portugal’s dispute and compared his status with Pelé and Maradona.
Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence over his abrupt departure from Portugal’s training camp, directing sharp criticism at coach Jorge Jesus and setting out his account of their dispute. In a lengthy social-media post published on Tuesday evening, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner also placed himself in the company of Pelé and Diego Maradona.
Ronaldo said he had intended to retire from international football after the 2026 World Cup, but claimed the Portuguese federation pushed him to continue. He also described several discussions with Jesus about how the coach planned to use him. The dispute came to a head around Portugal’s match against Norway on October 27.
According to Ronaldo’s account, an assistant told him he would play for 30 minutes despite an earlier plan for him to rest. He prepared to enter but remained on the bench. Further talks followed, during which the parties reportedly agreed on points Jesus would address publicly. One proposed explanation would have acknowledged the mistake of warming up a player of Ronaldo’s stature, comparing him with Pelé or Maradona, before leaving him unused.
Ronaldo said he never demanded a public apology, but became angry when Jesus did not deliver what had been agreed, calling it the second time the coach had failed to keep his word. He apologised to teammates and Portuguese supporters, while promising that farewell appearances would come later.
