Jose Mourinho credits Real Madrid spirit and bench

Real Madrid began their La Liga campaign with three points after Jose Mourinho attributed victory over Espanyol to the team’s character and the contribution of its substitutes. The coach said the squad’s readiness across the match was decisive in securing an important opening-round result.

Real Madrid defeated Espanyol 2-1 on Saturday. Mourinho felt his side deserved the win after controlling much of the contest and increasing the pressure after half-time, although he also believed Espanyol had not merited defeat. The result leaves Madrid with a winning start, while Espanyol begin the season without a point.

Mourinho placed particular value on the attitude of players who started on the bench. He said substitutes who remain committed to the team can change difficult matches, while a frustrated bench offers no help. He also stressed that Madrid will need every available player if they are to compete in four competitions, rather than relying on only 10, 11 or 12 members of the squad.

The coach also highlighted Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior as players of the highest level. He said Bellingham is most effective closer to goal, where he can connect midfield with the forwards and use his scoring instincts. Mourinho added that Vinicius is repeatedly fouled by opponents and must control his emotions, including during goal celebrations, to avoid being sent off.
