Josh Tarling ends Vuelta after his brother’s death

Josh Tarling has ended his Vuelta a España after deciding to withdraw during the sixth stage. The 22-year-old British rider’s decision brought messages of respect for him and his family, while Netcompany-Ineos said it could not be prouder of his courage in continuing to race.

Tarling’s younger brother, Finlay, died aged 19 after an accident at the Tour of Portugal, shortly before the Vuelta began. Netcompany-Ineos had left the decision to start with Tarling, who chose to compete despite the loss. His participation offered him a way to honour his brother, while the opening time trial in Monaco also gave him a chance to challenge for the red leader’s jersey.

That opportunity came close to materialising. Tarling finished third in the opening stage, only a few seconds behind winner Tadej Pogacar and Ethan Hayter. Pogacar later said he would have liked Tarling to take the leader’s jersey in view of the circumstances surrounding the race.

Tarling’s withdrawal means his Vuelta is over after six stages, but his decision to start and race through the opening days has drawn widespread admiration. The team’s announcement was quickly followed by further expressions of support for the rider and his family.
