Julián Álvarez misses Atlético training amid Barça interest
Julián Álvarez missed Atlético’s session while Barcelona pursue him and Arsenal monitor his uncertain future.
Julián Álvarez’s absence from Atlético de Madrid training has intensified uncertainty over his future, with Barcelona continuing to make the Argentina international their preferred attacking target. The 26-year-old has previously described joining Barça as a dream, while Atlético remain opposed to selling him to a direct rival.
Álvarez did not take part in Wednesday’s session, the club’s first since Sunday’s opening-day draw with Villarreal. Atlético said he was unwell after a difficult night and had been allowed to stay at home and recover. His absence therefore did not confirm an imminent transfer, but it has added to the attention surrounding his situation.
The forward’s relationship with Atlético supporters also came under scrutiny after he was jeered during the 2-2 draw at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. He then went straight to the dressing room at full time rather than joining teammates in greeting the crowd, fuelling speculation about his state of mind.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has approved a strategy focused on Álvarez, while Atlético chief executive Miguel Ángel Gil Marín has repeatedly insisted that the club’s exit door is closed. Arsenal are also monitoring the situation and could pursue the player if Atlético become willing to negotiate before the transfer window closes.
