Kylian Mbappé’s early form has strengthened his case for the season’s major individual prizes, with Spanish media highlighting him as a serious Ballon d’Or contender. His scoring rate has also put the Pichichi, awarded to La Liga’s top scorer, within his ambitions. Real Madrid coach José Mourinho has gone further, saying the forward deserves to be named the world’s best player this season.
Mbappé scored again as Real Madrid defeated promoted Malaga 4-0 on Sunday. The goal was his fourth in three league appearances, following his hat-trick in the 4-1 win over Real Sociedad. He struck Real Madrid’s third goal and has made an ideal start to his third season in Spain.
The France captain has now reached 90 goals for Madrid in all competitions, including 60 in the league. He has scored against 22 of the 23 Liga teams he has faced, with Elche the only exception. Madrid are scheduled to meet Elche on September 15.
The latest performances have drawn strong praise in Madrid’s sports press. Former Real player, coach and executive Jorge Valdano described this as Mbappé’s best opening to a season at the club and said his age, confidence and quality explained his level. Mbappé is also competing with Lamine Yamal, Harry Kane, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and defending winner Ousmane Dembélé in the Ballon d’Or discussion.
