Kylian Mbappé Targeted in Alleged France Kidnap Plot Investigation

Kylian Mbappé was among 26 wealthy targets allegedly identified by a gang accused of planning kidnappings and violent home raids, investigators say.

Kylian Mbappé was named among 26 wealthy people allegedly targeted by a criminal network accused of preparing kidnappings, violent home raids and robberies in France. The France captain and Real Madrid forward was not attacked, but his name appeared on a list recovered during an investigation led by the Paris Brigade for the Repression of Banditry, known as the BRB.

The suspected organiser is an 18-year-old Franco-Swiss man identified as Clément L. and known by the pseudonym “Lester Z”. He was already being held at Villepinte prison in pre-trial detention in connection with cases involving rape, pimping and organised theft. Investigators believe he continued directing people outside prison through Snapchat, using two illicit mobile phones. Five phones were ultimately seized during the investigation.

The alleged targets shared a single characteristic: wealth. The list included affluent shopkeepers, jewellers, wholesalers and business owners, as well as a rapper and Mbappé. Investigators reportedly found addresses linked to a meat trader in Val-d’Oise and a Chinese wholesaler in Paris’s 19th arrondissement. The alleged plans involved taking victims hostage, forcing entry into their homes or carrying out violent burglaries to obtain large sums of money.

The investigation developed after an attempted attack on a luxury watch dealer in Neuilly-sur-Seine. On 25 April, three men posing as delivery workers allegedly went to the dealer’s home and tried to assault him. They fled after abandoning an empty cardboard box. On 4 May, two armed men robbed the same dealer’s Paris shop and escaped with jewellery valued at €150,000.

The abandoned box provided the breakthrough. Fingerprints recovered from it helped the BRB identify Clément L. and alleged associates. The suspected organiser was arrested on 19 August as he left the Bobigny courthouse, where he was appearing in a separate pimping case. Another suspect, believed to have helped provide vehicles and other logistical support, was arrested alongside him.

The alleged criminal activity took place between 11 April and 19 August across Neuilly-sur-Seine, Val-d’Oise and Côte-d’Or. The addresses found on the phones suggested that some plans were still being prepared while other operations had already taken place. Mbappé’s inclusion indicated that the group was looking beyond local business figures and was prepared to consider a high-profile footballer whose public profile and wealth made him an attractive target.

Clément L. was formally placed under investigation in Nanterre on 21 August 2026 for organised theft and alleged plans to carry out attacks. He was then placed in isolation. During a hearing before the investigating chamber on 2 September, he acknowledged that the allegations were serious but sought to reduce his role, saying he had been an intermediary rather than the main organiser. The authorities did not accept that explanation as grounds for ending his strict isolation.

There is no indication in the available details that an operation against Mbappé reached the execution stage. The significance for the player lies in the discovery of his name among the suspected targets, rather than in a completed attack. Mbappé remains a central figure for Real Madrid and France, and the case places his status as one of football’s most visible and highly paid players within a wider criminal investigation focused on wealthy personalities. The immediate next step is the continuation of the judicial proceedings against Clément L. and the suspected accomplices, while investigators examine the communications and planned operations recovered from the seized phones.
