La Liga star Kylian Mbappé named in alleged kidnapping plot
Kylian Mbappé was among 26 wealthy people allegedly targeted by a gang whose suspected organiser directed plans from prison, investigators say.
Kylian Mbappé was among 26 wealthy people allegedly targeted by a criminal network accused of preparing kidnappings, violent home invasions and robberies in France. No direct action was carried out against the Real Madrid forward, but investigators considered the plan serious enough to place his name alongside those of business owners, a rapper and other public figures.
The suspected organiser was identified as Clément L., an 18-year-old Franco-Swiss man who used the nickname “Lester Z”. He was already being held in pre-trial detention at Villepinte prison in cases involving rape, procuring and organised robbery. Despite his detention, he is accused of continuing to direct people outside through Snapchat.
Investigators found two mobile phones used for communication inside the prison. Five phones were seized during the wider searches, and the analysis of the devices produced a list of 26 addresses linked to wealthy merchants and celebrities. The targets included jewellers, wholesalers, a meat trader in Val-d’Oise, a Chinese wholesaler in Paris’s 19th arrondissement, a rapper and Mbappé.
The investigation began with an attack on a luxury watch dealer in Neuilly-sur-Seine. On 25 April, three men posing as delivery workers went to the dealer’s home and allegedly attempted to assault him. They fled and left behind an empty cardboard box. A few days later, on 4 May, two armed men robbed the same dealer’s shop in Paris and took jewellery valued at €150,000.
Fingerprints recovered from the abandoned box provided the key lead for the Brigade de répression du banditisme, the Paris organised-crime unit. The suspected network operated between 11 April and 19 August across Neuilly-sur-Seine, Val-d’Oise and Côte-d’Or. Its alleged methods combined deception, violence and the collection of information about affluent victims before planned attacks.
Clément L. was arrested on 19 August as he left the Bobigny court, where he was appearing in a separate procuring case. A suspected accomplice was arrested with him and is believed to have helped provide vehicles and other logistical support. Clément L. was charged in Nanterre on 21 August with organised robbery and alleged plans for attacks. He was then placed in isolation.
During a hearing on 2 September, Clément L. acknowledged that the allegations were serious but sought to reduce his role. He said he was only an intermediary and not the main organiser. The court did not accept that explanation and confirmed his continued isolation. The legal proceedings concern suspected criminal activity, and the inclusion of Mbappé’s name establishes a planned target, not a completed attack on the player.
Mbappé’s profile appears to have made him attractive to the alleged network. The France captain plays for Real Madrid and was described as one of the world’s highest-paid athletes in 2025, with reported earnings of €80 million. His public status, wealth and visibility placed him among the type of targets the group is accused of selecting.
The allegations come as Mbappé remains one of football’s central figures. He was reported to have finished the 2026 World Cup as its top scorer and as the tournament’s all-time leading scorer. At club level, he opened the new La Liga season strongly, scoring a hat-trick on the second matchday before adding another goal in Real Madrid’s 4-0 win over Málaga.
That sporting momentum has also kept Mbappé at the centre of discussion around the 2026 Ballon d’Or. Real Madrid coach José Mourinho argued that the award should recognise the world’s best individual player regardless of team trophies and said one player had marked the summer. The security case now adds a serious off-field dimension to a period in which Mbappé’s performances and public profile have continued to draw attention.
