Lamine Yamal named world’s best as Gordon weighs Kane case

Lamine Yamal has been identified as the world’s best player by Anthony Gordon, adding weight to the Barcelona forward’s case in the Ballon d’Or debate. Gordon did not present Yamal as an unquestionable winner, though, and said the final choice should be left to the voters.

The England international has a close view of both leading contenders. He plays with Harry Kane for England and has faced Yamal, who has represented Barcelona since joining the club this summer. Gordon said Kane’s goalscoring season had been historic, making the Bayern Munich striker a compelling option for voters who place particular value on a player’s ability to score.

Gordon’s position reflects two different arguments for the award. Kane’s case is built around his exceptional production in front of goal, while Yamal’s influence and qualities have led Gordon to rank him above every other player. Rather than separating the pair completely, Gordon acknowledged that the result could depend on what each voter values most.

The voting process ended on Monday, so neither player can now alter the ballot. The next Ballon d’Or winner, who will succeed Ousmane Dembélé, is due to be revealed on 26 October at the ceremony in London.
