Laurent Jalabert links Alaphilippe exit to fed-up feeling

Laurent Jalabert believes Julian Alaphilippe’s sudden decision to retire reflects a deep sense of weariness with professional cycling. The former French rider said he was surprised by the announcement, although Alaphilippe’s struggles during the 2026 Tour had suggested that his career at the race was nearing its end.

Alaphilippe, 34, announced last week that he was ending his career after completing the Tour’s final stage in Paris, which passed through Montmartre before finishing on the Champs-Élysées. His decision came despite having one year remaining on his contract with Tudor. The two-time world champion, in 2020 and 2021, had endured a difficult Tour and was unable to match the strongest riders physically.

Jalabert said Alaphilippe continued to race with commitment, but no longer appeared capable of turning that effort into results against the best riders. He also noted the strong support Alaphilippe received along the route, describing him as the rider who drew the most encouragement from spectators.

The retirement therefore closes the career of a popular former world champion at a point when performance had fallen short of the demands placed on him. Jalabert said he could understand Alaphilippe’s choice because cycling requires considerable effort even when results do not follow, while still regretting that he will not continue.
